First of all, being alert while driving is the most basic rule on the road. Virtually all traffic accidents involve inattention on the part of one or both drivers. The reasons for lack of attention can be various, including daydreaming, distractions, fatigue, “highway hypnosis”, talking on the cell phone or with a passenger etc. Being alert is the only way to see, recognize and avoid the hazardous situations on the road. These are the three basic factors for staying safe while driving. One often quoted statistic shows that most collisions happen not far from home. This is the case, because lots of people tend to feel safe and protected when they find themselves in well-known surroundings. Keeping in mind this fact will perhaps help you stay as alert while driving in your neighborhood as in other parts of the town or the country. Furthermore, to be on the safe side, you can make a little test – the next time you drive, try to concentrate solely on the driving itself without letting your thoughts wander. You might think it’s an easy task, but the truth is it demands great concentration and clear mind. Seasoned drivers don’t have to think about driving much as they do it automatically. However, staying safe is worth giving it a go, no matter how experienced you think you are as a driver. Paying attention can simply be turned into a habit and a good one. But it requires willingness, understanding and hard work. Driving is probably the most dangerous thing most people do during their lives. As such it deserves full attention.
